Lupus Mnemonic- Simple Mnemonic for Lupus

In this article ‘Lupus mnemonic‘, I will help you to remember the ACR diagnostic criteria in SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus). You will find two kinds of mnemonics devices below. Before we get into those details, let us see what are the criteria?

Lupus Mnemonic

 ACR Diagnostic Criteria in SLE:

1. Serositis

2. Oral Ulcers

3. Arthritis

4. Photosensitivity

5. Blood Cells

6. Renal

7. ANA

8. Immunologic

9. Neuropsych

10.Malar Rash

11.Discoid Rash

Lupus Mnemonic- Mnemonic device 1

The SLE mnemonic is simple first letter mnemonic as given below:

Serositis:  Some

Oral Ulcers: Old

Arthritis: Aged

Photosensitivity: People

Blood Cells: Behave

Renal: Rudely

ANA: And

Immunologic: Irritate

Neuropsych: Nice

Malar Rash: Modern

Discoid Rash: Dames

Lupus Mnemonic: Mnemonic device 2

This is a different approach to remembering the diagnostic criteria in SLE. Most of the words above do not trigger any mental images or the words are not easy to visualize. To solve this puzzle, we can use substitute words which sound close to the words in question.Once you have the substitute words, you can associate them with one another using linking system and create an illogical and
ridiculous lupus mnemonic story like I created in my previous article ‘cranial nerves mnemonic‘.

The table below gives you the substitute words.

SLE Criteria Substitute Words
Serositis Sea Row Shy Teats
Oral Ulcers Over All Ulcers
Arthritis Heart Writers
Photosensitivity Photo Signs Witty
Blood Cells Blood In Cells
Renal Run All
ANA Anna
Immunologic Human Log Chick
Neuropsych Knee Row Psyche
Malar Rash Molar Rash
Discoid Rash Disco Rash

So did you like the two approaches for lupus mnemonic? Did you find them useful? Could you come up with a ridiculous and illogical lupus mnemonic story? Let me know in comments!

Epidermis Mnemonic- Remember And Retain Epidermal Strata

Through ‘epidermis mnemonic‘, I am going to teach you to remember and retain the layer of epidermis. Well, I am going to follow the memory techniques as I did for Lupus Mnemonic.

Epidermis Mnemonic

Layer Of Epidermis/Strata Of The Epidermis:

1.Stratum Corneum

2.Stratum Lucidum

3.Stratum Granulosum

4.Stratum Spinosum

5.Stratum Basale

Epidermis Mnemonic: Mnemonic Device 1

Now,as I never forget to mention, the above words are abstract and do not trigger any mental images so that you can easily visualize them.So what is the solution?
Well, convert them into something that can be visualized and that can be done through substitute words. Yes, that is right. Substitute words can help you to remember anything that is abstract and does not make sense. So now I will create substitute words for each of the layer of Epidermis as given in the table below.

Layers of Epidermis Substitute Words
Stratum Corneum Straighten Cow Knee
Stratum Lucidum Straighten Lucy Dam
Stratum Granulosum Straighten Granny’s Old Son!
Stratum Spinosum Straighten Spine Oh Son!
Stratum Basale Straighten Bus All

Substitute words are nothing but words which sound close to the words that we want to remember. They just sound similar. Now that we have the substitute words, you can associate all the substitute words with one another using linking system and create an illogical and ridiculous epidermis mnemonic story! I have discussed this process in cranial nerves mnemonic.

Epidermis Mnemonic: Mnemonic Device 2

I understand that everyone may not regards the above mnemonic aid as tangible! For those of you who do not buy the above technique, I have created a first letter epidermis mnemonic, which is given below:

Corneum: Come!

Lucidum: Lets

Granulosum: Grow

Spinosum: Some

Basale: Berries

So thats about first letter mnemonics. Let me know if the epidermis mnemonic was useful? Also give me your comments on the memory techniques used here, especially substitute words!

How To Remember Diatomic Elements- Diatomic Elements Mnemonic

This simple article will show you ‘how to remember diatomic elements‘ with the help of substitute words and linking system or association system. So what are the 7 diatomic elements?

Diatomic Elements Mnemonic

Seven Diatomic elements list:

1.Hydrogen

2.Nitrogen

3.Oxygen

4.Fluorine

5.Chlorine

6.Iodine

7.Bromine

Simple answer to ‘how to remember diatomic elements’:

Since the diatomic elements do not trigger any mental images, it is difficult to visualize them and in turn, tough to memorize. But this problem can be solved with the help of substitute words and association system. Substitute words are nothing but words which sound close to the elements and association system is linking these substitute words with one another, ridiculously and illogically.

Diatomic Elements Substitute Words
Hydrogen Hide Trojan
Nitrogen Night Trojan
Oxygen Ox Jane
Fluorine Flower Rain
Chlorine Clove Rain
Iodine Hide In
Bromine Bra Mine

Now we will create a simple illogical diatomic elements story. For diatomic, you can assign the ‘die atomic‘. So here we go! See in your mind’s eye, millions of atom bombs are suffering and dying (Diatomic) and then those atom bombs hide inside a Trojan (Hydrogen) and the day turns into night (Nitrogen) and Jane on Ox approaches (Oxygen) and the skies start raining flowers (Fluorine) and those flowers turn into cloves (Chlorine) and then those cloves hide inside bra mine (Iodine) (Bromine).

Simple as that. Exaggerate the mental images. Make them ridiculous and illogical.

Did I answer ‘how to remember diatomic elements’? Let me know in comments!

5 Simple Mnemonic Devices To Improve Memory

Mnemonic Devices For Daily Use- Remember Anything and Everything

Mnemonic devices are simple learning and memory techniques which will help you to improve your ability to memorize things. Simply said, these are memory techniques which help our minds to decipher complex information and make it easy to remember. In the process, we get to use words, images, pictures, rhymes and alphabets.

Mnemonic Devices For Memory Improvement

Mnemonic devices have been used since time immemorial, maybe since Greek era and everyone uses them sometime or the other, even though we are not aware of it. Everything said and done, mnemonic devices should be easy, unambiguous and vivid.

What is so special about mnemonic devices or why it is considered as a memory technique?

Our minds or brains are strange. We tend to forget what is usual and ordinary. Our mind likes information that is unusual, out-of-the-ordinary, ridiculous, shocking, humorous and illogical. These devices deliver just that. Mnemonics are funny and vivd.

Below some of the most commonly used mnemonic devices:

First Letter Mnemonic or Acrostic:

This mnemonic device is created by taking the first letter of each term or word that you want to remember and create a funny sentence. For example-Planet Mnemonic- Many VIPs Eat Mangoes Just So Urgently Not Properly which will help you to remember the all the planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)

Loci Method or Journey Method:

Loci method dates back to Greek times and sources say that it is one of the oldest memory techniques ever known to mankind. This method is also called journey method. This method uses places or locations or rooms as memory pegs. For example, the journey from your home to your church. Along that path you will have so many landmarks and those landmarks are used as pegs and the information that you want to remember is associated those landmarks. The landmarks could be anything – A neighbor’s house, an old electric pole, a thrash can, a bus stop, a garage, a railway crossing etc.
You can use the rooms in your home too. But the bottom line is that, you need to remember these landmarks in order so that when you want to recall the actual information, you can go in one order.

Acronyms:

This is similar to first letter mnemonic. The first letter of each term or word is used to make an acronym. For example, the spaces in the treble clef can be memorized by the acronym ‘FACE‘. The Great Lakes can be memorized by the acronym ‘HOLMES‘. (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie,Lake Ontario)

Substitute Words and Visual Association:

Substitute words are usually used for words or terms which do not make any sense or we cannot associate them with any thing. In simple words, they do not trigger a mental image. For example, ‘Pere‘ in French means Father. We can use  ’pear’as a substitute word to remember father. This is one part of the equation. To remember the word ‘pere’ we will have to associate pear with father, to complete the equation. Try to make the association as illogical and ridiculous as possible. Like I mentioned initially, our mind remembers what is out-of-ordinary. So don’t just imagine your father eating a pear, see a mental picture where your father is eat a pear, the size of a water melon!

Forming Groups or Chunking:

These mnemonic devices categorize or classify the information based on some common characteristics. For example: Python, cobra, Vipers and Black Mamba can be categorized under snakes.

Chunking is a method where information is broken down into small organized ‘chunk’ which can be easily memorized. For example, telephone numbers can be broken down into chunks of 3 numbers or 4.

Mnemonic devices are great aids for remembering and recalling any kind of information. I would like to know if you use mnemonics to remember information, in comments.

Mnemonic Maker For Creating Your Own Mnemonic

By far the most useful and efficient mnemonic maker or mnemonic creator according to me is Spacefem’s Mnemonic Generator.

Mnemonic Maker

A mnemonic maker should be:

. Easy to use
. Different results for the same input
. Help you to enhance your creativity
. The result should be satisfactory

To use an analogy, Spacefem’s mnemonic generator spoon feeds you but it will feed you hard food so that you don’t swallow it immediately but chew it and then swallow it.

Now let me show you how this mnemonic maker qualifies and passes all the criteria that I listed above.

Is this mnemonic creator easy to use?

Yes, this mnemonic generator is very easy to use. Basically, Spacefem’s mnemonic device allows two kinds of input:

. You can insert letters
. You can insert words
For example- Lets say my name is Carlito Travis Willis

If I take the initial letters of my name, I will get CTW and if I input this, you will get ‘Cats Tickle Women‘.

If you insert my full name, you will get ‘Crosswalks Trash Waves’

So, for acronyms, you will get a word for each letter and if you insert words (space/commma), you will get a word for the first letter of each word.

Does this mnemonic maker provide multiple results?

Yes, when you input your information, may it be an acronym or a group of words, if you don’t like the result, you can always press ‘Go’ again and tadaha!!! You get a totally different result and if you are still not happy, keep pressing ‘Go’ until you are satisfied. If you still not satisfied, read below!

Will it give you an opportunity to vent your creativity?

Yes, for example, when I inserted VIBGYOR, acronym to remember the colors of rainbow, I got ’Verified Increased Businesses Grow Yellow Old Robots‘.
Well, this mnemonic is difficult to remember and retain. Now this calls for my creativity. I just altered this sentence as ‘Verified Indian Business Grow Yellow Old Robots‘. Doesn’t make sense but I am trying to make a point. With little imagination you can come out with great results. So this mnemonic creator helps you wear that creativity hat.

And finally, will the result or the mnemonic that you create, be satisfactory?
Well, it all depends on your creativity and imagination to improvise and innovate and make the result satisfactory, as per your needs.
Having said this, try out Spacefem’s mnemonic maker and let me know if you found it helpful in comments!
